Retroid Pocket Starter Guide

Retroid Pocket Starter Guide

Last updated: 31DEC2024 (see Changelog for details)

The Retroid Pocket handhelds are seemingly simple devices to set up — they run on Android, so how hard could it be? Well it turns out there are some orientation quirks in getting these handhelds up and running, and so this guide is meant to take you from the very beginning of your journey with the device and take you to the point of being a superstar.

This guide will work for a number of Retroid Pocket devices. The major difference will be the performance for each, which can be summarized in the table below:

I have video reviews for each device on my YouTube channel, which you can find either by checking out my Retroid Pocket playlist or the embedded videos below.

Are the Retroid Pocket devices pre-loaded with games? No, the devices ship as a general Android phone or tablet, with only essential apps (Play Store, Chrome, etc.) pre-installed. You are on your own to find the emulated game files (ROMs) to play on this device. There are no copyrighted files on this website.

LineageOS (Android 8.1) on Retroid Pocket 2

LineageOS (Android 8.1) on Retroid Pocket 2

This brand new firmware upgrade to the Retroid Pocket 2 has breathed new life into this little device. This lightweight Android build provides a 20% speed improvement when launching and navigating apps, thanks to its lower overhead. This means that the interface will feel significantly faster if you are coming from Android 8.1 (see my guide here), and quite a huge jump if you are still on the stock firmware (Android 6.0).

Check out the video below for my detailed installation instructions. Note that this firmware does NOT allow you to access the RetroidOS interface, so if that’s important to you, I recommend sticking with Android the regular 8.1 version. This update will also wipe your internal storage, but I’ll show you how to re-load your stock apps to the device. This update can be done from either Android 6.0 or 8.1 firmware.

Finally, note that this update can only be performed on a Windows computer. If you have a Mac, make friends with a Windows user, and then borrow their computer for a few minutes (bring cookies and/or beer when you do).

Retroid Pocket 2 – Android 8.1 Install Guide

Last updated: 02JAN2021 (see Changelog for details)

After months of promises, a rescinded update, and a very patient Retroid Pocket 2 community, we finally have the Android 8.1 update that has been in the works since August.

I have to say that this operating system update does wonders for the UI lag issues that were prominent in the original Android 6.0 OS, and it has breathed new life into my device. So I decided to document my upgrade experience so that you could easily follow the steps. Please note that you will need a Windows PC in order to run this update, because we will be using .exe and batch files, which won’t run on MacOS. If you are a Mac user, check out my guide on how to run a virtual Windows machine.

Guide: Among Us on the Retroid Pocket 2

Last updated 10OCT2020 (see Changelog for details)

Among Us is a popular game on Steam and smartphones, and given that it isn’t very CPU-intensive, it seems like a perfect fit for the Android-based Retroid Pocket 2. The only problem is that the game is designed for touch controls. Luckily, there’s a very easy workaround to get this game up and running on your handheld device.

Note that this method will work for just about any touch-based Android app, so if you have a favorite game that you’re itching to try, this is your solution.

Guide: Sega Dreamcast on the Retroid Pocket 2

Last updated 29SEP2020 (see Changelog for details)

I have a confession to make: I’d never really played the Sega Dreamcast until my Retroid Pocket 2 arrived in the mail. Because of this fact, I ended up diving into this system first, to explore all of the new games (well, new to me). Here is my quick guide on how to set up Dreamcast emulation on your Retroid Pocket 2. There are still a lot of people out in the community finding new ways to improve gameplay on this device, so expect frequent updates to the guide in the future.
